NBPA Expresses Concern Over Orlando Magic’s Donation to DeSantis Super PAC
What’s the issue?
In an unusual event of sports and politics, the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) has expressed its concern regarding a recent donation by the Orlando Magic to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ super PAC, “Never Back Down.” The $50,000 contribution has stirred conversations within the basketball community due to the controversial nature of DeSantis’ recent policies and statements.

Was this right?
In a statement released on Friday, the NBPA acknowledged the right of individuals within the NBA community to express their personal political viewpoints, which includes making donations and issuing statements. Nonetheless, the association underscored the significance of considering the diverse spectrum of values and perspectives held by those connected to the team when contributions are made on behalf of the entire team, funded by the collective endeavors of its players and staff.

What does the Orlando Magic have to say about this?
The Orlando Magic defended their donation, clarifying that it was made before Governor DeSantis officially entered the 2024 presidential race. The team stated that the contribution aimed to improve the ongoing growth and prosperity of Central Florida, where the team is situated.
Interestingly, records from the Federal Elections Commission reveal that the donation was received on June 26, following Governor DeSantis’ announcement of his presidential candidacy on May 24. The team maintained that the check itself was dated May 19, preceding DeSantis’ formal declaration but following several reports indicating his intention to run.
More Controversy
Further adding complexity is the Magic’s enduring partnership with Disney, spanning over a decade, with the company serving as the team’s official jersey sponsor. Notably, Governor DeSantis has publicly criticized Disney in his political endeavors within Florida.
The Orlando Magic has a history in political affairs
This isn’t the first instance of the Magic becoming entangled in the political arena. The team has a history of contributing to various political entities, with donations made to super PACs like “Conservative Results” and “Maverick PAC USA,” along with a contribution to Linda Chapin’s congressional campaign.
Since 1991, the Magic, a franchise owned by the DeVos family, have maintained political ties. The late Richard DeVos procured the team, while his son Dan DeVos currently holds the position of chairman. Betsy DeVos, a family member, previously chaired the Michigan Republican Party and served as the U.S. Secretary of Education during the Trump administration.

As the NBA offseason progresses, this unexpected convergence of sports, finance, and politics is generating discussions within the basketball community. While the Magic’s donation may have been intended to support local interests, it has prompted broader dialogues about the role of sports organizations in the political landscape and the necessity of making such decisions thoughtfully.
