In an interview with the Connecticut Post in February 2021, Aaliyah talked about her experiences playing basketball with Jermaine and his influence on her.
The outlet claims that when the two brothers played one-on-one at the Royal Military College of Canada, Jermaine was not kind to his younger sister.
“He showed me tough love, because that is what I needed. At the time, I didn’t know that. I could see it as, ‘He’s just picking on me and he doesn’t know what he’s saying.’ But he knew,” Aaliyah said.

The two would talk about life and basketball over ice cream at White Mountain Homemade Ice Cream after their games.
“You’ve got that sibling rivalry when you’re playing. He was more developed than me, older, stronger. I’d get frustrated. I’d get upset,” remarked the UConn Huskies standout.
“But what makes me the player I am today is overcoming challenges. He knew, down the line, that was going to be important. I really cherish those moments because that’s where we bonded most.
“On the court, we don’t like each other. Off the court, ice cream. We’re just brother and sister and I, for sure, loved those moments.”

In observance of the Los Angeles Lakers and the siblings’ mutual respect for the late Kobe Bryant, Aaliyah also made the decision to wear her hair in braids of purple and gold.
