MLB Banned The ‘Big Hat’ Home Run Celebration By Atlanta Braves
Due to contractual constraints, the MLB has prohibited the Atlanta Braves Big Hat home run celebration. In the dugout, the Braves had been wearing an enormous baseball cap with the team’s insignia to commemorate their home runs.
MLB Banned The ‘Big Hat’ Home Run Celebration By Atlanta Braves
The Atlanta Braves decided to establish a new tradition when a fan flung the large hat with the team’s emblem on it from More Than Sports into the dugout at the opening of the season. However, spectators observed that the squad hadn’t been sporting the large cap in recent games.
However, there seems to be a cap to that enjoyment, and for MLB, the Atlanta Braves passed it when their home run celebration angered brand sponsor New Era.

The celebration was abruptly cut short when New Era, the business with an exclusive contract with MLB, contacted both the organization and the Braves to notify them that the enormous cap was in violation of their contract.
Fans began to wonder about the huge hat’s future when they noted that the squad had ceased using it in recent games. After More Than Sports, the business that made the huge hat, tweeted a statement confirming that the celebration was no longer allowed, word of the restriction spread.
I get it, @NewEraCap is the exclusive hat provider to MLB. But even the oversized hat? Optics on this are bad. Couldn't work out a compromise? Make a deal with the oversized hat dudes. Slap a New Era logo on it, overcharge like you do on your lids. https://t.co/KSY55Ikz8f

Naturally, New Era is a company that spends millions on MLB cap rights. It annoys them to see a team so enthused about a hat that isn’t profitable for New Era. In this nation, professional sports have a business bent.
However, New Era must also understand that it isn’t up against a novelty large hat business that charges $100 for hats and had an appearance on Shark Tank. If New Era had just let the Braves have fun, it wouldn’t have been so petty and would have brought less attention to the hat. Because the league has an exclusive deal with New Era to make and sell all on-field headgear, clubs are not permitted to wear other brands during games or in league-sponsored events.
