Wednesday night’s Mississippi State baseball game marked Jurrangelo Cijntje’s big-game debut, and he was given credit for the team’s 14-3 victory over the University of Louisiana Monroe. Cijntje made his debut for the Virginia Military Institute in relief, although he slept oddly on his left side and only used his right arm to throw. In a single inning, he gave up just two hits and no runs.

On Wednesday, the Bulldogs’ starting pitcher was a true freshman and switch-pitcher from Pembroke Pines, Florida, who was able to retire seven batters in four scoreless innings.

The Brewers selected Cijntje in the 18th round of last year’s draught, but he declined to sign with them. Instead, he made the decision to slaughter college bats, just like he did on Wednesday.

Cijntje is naturally left-handed, yet he performs better from the right. Pumping 92 pitches from the left and 97 pitches from the right, the 5-foot-11, 170-pound switch-pitcher.

Against the ULM War Hawks, Cijntje only gave up one hit and one walk. He used his right hand to strike out six batters, but he switched to his left hand to strike out a ULM batter in the third.

Cijntje, who was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 18th round of the 2017 amateur draught, had the chance to sign a professional contract with the team. He ultimately made the decision to attend Mississippi State to further his education. The advantages of Cijntje’s choice to play collegiate ball are already being felt by the Bulldogs.

When the Bulldogs play Arizona State on Friday at Dudy Noble Field, they will be filled with optimism for their young season and a gem of a pitcher.
