Mike Tirico Is Holding His Ground On The Lions ‘Asterisk’ Comment After Extreme Criticism
After his postgame remarks regarding the Detroit Lions’ shocking victory against the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday went viral, NFL fans criticized NBC’s Mike Tirico for them.
Mike Tirico Is Holding His Ground On The Lions ‘Asterisk’ Comment After Extreme Criticism
The fact that Kansas City was without their best targets, star tight end Travis Kelce and star defensive lineman Chris Jones (Jones due to a contract disagreement and Kelce due to a knee injury), meant that Detroit’s victory would be marked with an asterisk.
No offense to Mike Tirico, but this is a ridiculous thing to say after a team wins
We have teams with 10 guys on IR every year in the NFL (in later weeks of a season), you never hear someone try to take a win away by saying "Asterisks" – guys didn't playpic.twitter.com/21nZVz7aIu

“This (win) has an asterisk because of no Chris Jones and no Travis Kelce,” Tirico begins to explain, finishing by saying that the way in which the Lions finished last season shows that Thursday’s win in the home of the defending Super Bowl champs is no fluke.
That offended many people in the NFL, diminishing what was one of the Lions’ team’s best victories in a long time.
In Tirico’s opinion, the Lions did receive their flowers from him.

“We saw the Chiefs go into Foxborough in 2016 [editor’s note: it was 2017] and win on Opening Night, and that announced to everyone that the Kansas City Chiefs were going to be a factor,” Tirico said at the end of the game on “Thursday Night Football.”
“This has an asterisk because of no Chris Jones and no Travis Kelce, but after what you saw at the end of last year and what you saw tonight, the team in blue and silver is for real.”
Get rid of NBC NFL football announcers. Can't stand 'em; have to watch game muted. Mike Tirico and Cris Collingsworth. Couldn't be any worse. pic.twitter.com/fIH9vaTDoV

Campbell chose to respond briefly on this occasion.
“Well, is there an asterisk next to our 1-0?” Campbell quipped during a Friday afternoon conference call.
A significant occasion occurred for Campbell and his team on Thursday night.
I LOVE Mike Tirico. He is a great ambassador of the city of Detroit but there is no asterisk on the win.
This is the NFL. You play with what ya got. Every team does it.
He is also a professional, he can also handle a little criticism. For people to call out Lions fans for…

at addition to winning at one of the NFL’s most difficult venues, the Lions accomplished it on the same night that the Chiefs hoisted their Super Bowl LVII banner.
After experiencing a wide range of emotions on the way to victory, Campbell’s witty reply to Tirico’s remarks seems very appropriate.
