Michael Porter Jr. has expressed his opinions regarding the NBA’s present circumstances in no uncertain terms. With his most recent story on the WNBA, the Denver Nuggets small forward stirred much controversy and drew responses from supporters worldwide.

In the basketball regime, there has already been a protracted dispute over women’s wage parity. The story is a contentious issue since the proponents of both sides hold different opinions about it.

With so much outstanding young talent in the game, interest in women’s basketball is undoubtedly going to grow, yet the WNBA is still facing serious issues. Players continue to get pitiful earnings, teams frequently travel without charter aircraft, and the league’s marketing may require a whole makeover. Women hoopers need more advocates from both the media and men’s players, but unfortunately, some men are still stuck in the dark.

Porter Jr. brought up how the WNBA does not get the same kind of attention as the NBA when speaking on the “The Pivot” podcast. Because of this, female basketball players make far less money than their male counterparts.

“As much as I understand females wanting the same treatment as men basketball players, it’s a different sport. They are not packing out the arenas, obviously, their TV deals aren’t the same,” Porter Jr. said. “As much (as) I advocate for women and the quality of the respect of their craft and all those things, you can’t pay them the same thing, you know? But I do feel like there should be a little way to make a little bit more money because they are very talented.”

Women’s sports advocates on X/Twitter and WNBA fans have taken notice of Oster’s position on equal pay. Former collegiate tennis player Alexi, a supporter of women in sports, responded to Michael Porter Jr.’s comparison of female basketball players to ping-pong players with the following message:

“This wasn’t advocating for women’s hoops at all smh it’s actually insulting.”

Porter Jr. raised the idea that WNBA players cannot be paid in line with NBA players’ pay. Surprisingly, the majority of WNBA players concur.

The premier player for the Las Vegas Aces, Kelsey Plum, stated that the WNBA would fail if pay were equalized. Plum, though, is in favor of an equal income split between the NBA and all female professionals.

One major problem that highlights the difference in professional sports between men’s and women’s is the salary discrepancy that exists among WNBA players. The financial disparity is striking, with the minimum pay in the NBA being $1.1 million for the same season in 2023 and the highest income in the WNBA being only $235,000.

Notwithstanding the financial challenges, WNBA players have demonstrated incredible tenacity and resourcefulness in budgeting their money and seeking out new revenue streams.
