Miami Dolphins Continue to Trust Tua Tagovailoa Amid Reports of a Potential Trade Away
Since Mike McDaniels and Chris Grier joined forces as the team’s head coach and general manager, last week was much like many others for the Miami Dolphins in that they declared their unwavering dedication to Tua Tagovailoa as the team’s quarterback. After everything Tua went through under Brian Flores’ leadership and the subsequent public support from Mike McDaniel and Chris Grier as recently as this past week, it’s difficult to think that the Dolphins would flip around and repeat this.
The coaching staff and front office of the Miami Dolphins spent last week in Indianapolis for the NFL combine, and while Tua Tagovailoa’s future was the primary subject, it wasn’t the only significant one.
Tua Tagovailoa to stay in Miami
Tagovailoa is qualified to have his fifth-year option taken up, but the deadline is May 1. He missed four games last season due to two confirmed concussions. Miami’s attack was among the most effective in the league when Tagovailoa was healthy, but there are still some issues that must be resolved if the Dolphins are to advance and compete for the Super Bowl.
“It’s important to recognize that we have a congruence of interest by the Dolphins and the player,” McDaniel said. “That both parties really want him to play at a very high level for a long time for the Miami Dolphins.”

“So what’s the best way to really engineer that or to help manifest that? Well, those are the things that we’re kind of weighing in terms of the various options with the same desired end [result] as Tua would like.”
By the date of May 1, the club is much more likely to choose to execute the fifth-year option than to extend Tagovailoa’s contract. In fact, at this point, a multi-year increase would be almost unexpected. But none of that indicates that Tagovailoa will be replaced by the Dolphins for the upcoming campaign.
