The “repurposing” of Steve Cohen’s investment in the New York Mets has started. The Mets are attempting to develop their farm system and snag young talents rather than spending their money on well-known but aging veterans.

Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, two future Hall of Fame pitchers, had to be traded in order to accomplish this. This raises several concerns regarding the Mets’ plans to assemble a pitching staff the following season.

The Mets’ season in 2023 did not go as planned. They will have to make moves in 2024 to be considered a contender, but they kept their core essentially intact following the trade deadline.

However, because to last month’s MLB Draft and the money they were willing to swallow on contracts in trades, as well as some good negotiations, they have revamped their farm system in a month in a way that would normally take a couple of years.

Prior to the recent few weeks, the Mets system was seen as being in the middle of the pack, if not somewhat behind, and now they have added multiple top 100 prospects as well as others who are regarded in the industry as potential future Top 100 prospects.

The group of players that GM Billy Eppler re-signed by the trade deadline, including Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, David Robertson, Tommy Pham, Mark Canha, and Dominic Leone, has received greater support.

A lot of talented young players were acquired in the Mets sell-off but very few were pitchers, concerning many Mets fans.

The Mets acquired top-ranked outfielders Drew Gilbert and Ryan Clifford, infielder/outfielder Luisangel Acuna, infielders Marco Vargas, Jeremy Rodriguez, and Jeremiah Jackson, catcher Ronald Hernandez, and righty Justin Jarvis between Saturday’s Scherzer trade and Tuesday at 6 p.m.

“This is probably a bottom-five-ish farm system going into the deadline,” Jeffrey Paternostro, the lead prospect writer at Baseball Prospectus, said over the phone Thursday. “I think they saw an opportunity to, quite frankly, buy a top-10 or -15 farm system in baseball.”

On most Mets’ top prospects lists include Mike Vasil, Justin Jarvis, Blade Tidwell, Dominic Hamel, Tyler Stuart, Coleman Crow, Christian Scott, and Landon Marceaux, all of whom are highly-rated young players.

Pitchers make up 14 of the top 30 Mets prospects, including  3 acquired in trades this year.

Not all of these guys will pay off but you figure with a group as big as eight a couple will make solid contributions.

Owner Steve Cohen will likely pay the $100 million in salary for players that were shipped away, which enabled the Mets to acquire stronger prospects.

Many people inside and outside the club concur that the strategy was well executed.

The Mets have nothing to look forward to for the remainder of the season, but they may spice things up by showcasing some of these young pitchers.

To determine how much money they should spend on starting pitchers in the free agency market, they must first assess if any of these players can contribute in the upcoming season.
