Mets Owner Steven Cohen Threatened His Team With Trade Deadline Selloff At The Recent Press Conference

He agrees that there is still time to turn the season around and points to the most recent victory over the Milwaukee Brewers as cause for optimism.
Cohen agrees that tough choices could need to be made if the team’s performance doesn’t improve.
"I'll take responsibility. I'm the owner."

Front Office Sports claims that Cohen is dissatisfied with the way the 2023 season is developing. In an effort to increase the Mets’ chances, he is so concerned that he is considering making some changes at the trade deadline.
“It’s been incredibly frustrating. If we don’t get better, we have decisions to make at the trade deadline. It’s on the players.”
Steve Cohen when asked on management:
“Listen, I’m a patient guy. Everybody wants me to fire this person, fire that person, but I don’t see that as a way to operate.”

Owner of the Mets Steven Cohen promised manager Buck Showalter and general manager Billy Eppler job security through the end of the season while threatening his failing team with a trade deadline selloff unless New York returns to the playoff race.

“All is not lost yet, but it’s getting late,” Cohen said during a news conference Wednesday with the Mets in fourth place in the NL East. “I’m preparing my management team for all possibilities. If we don’t get better, we have decisions to make at the trade deadline, and that’s not my preferred end result but I’m preparing all contingencies.
"If I'm in this position, I'm not adding. I think that would be pretty silly. I'd probably do very little."

“And we’ll see where it goes. It’s on the players, right?” Cohen continued. “They’re veterans. They’ve been there before. These are players who have done it, and we’ll see if they can get their act together and string together some wins. I can’t pitch and I can’t hit. That’s the way it goes.”

This gives the impression that the Mets owner could be willing to punt on this campaign rather than take extreme action with no certainty of reward. The worst thing you can do if you want to recruit good individuals to your company, Cohen said, is to be impulsive. your is why he is stressing loyalty to his workers at this time.

Since the deadline for this year’s trades is August 1, a poor season can prompt the organization to give player moves more thought.
With a record of 36-43, the New York Mets are now 16.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves for first place in the NL East. Furthermore, they are 8.5 games back in the battle for the wild card.
