Edwin Diaz, the outstanding closer for the New York Mets, tore his patellar tendon during the World Baseball Classic, but he is not ruling out pitching again this year.

“If everything keeps going how it’s going, we’ve got a chance to pitch,” Diaz told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. “The trainers and doctors will decide, but I feel great. Let’s see what’s coming for us.”

Diaz suffered a knee injury while celebrating a triumph for Team Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic. This occurred on March 15, and the next day, he had surgery.

The injured closer for the Mets, according to manager Buck Showalter, “is doing a lot of things he wasn’t doing” earlier in his recovery. However, he declined to go into further detail regarding Diaz’s rehabilitation on Saturday.

“He’s meeting every benchmark,’’ Showalter said.

Prior to the Mets’ 5-1 defeat to the Dodgers on Saturday night at Citi Field, Showalter stated that Diaz’s schedule would not be influenced by the team’s situation.

“When the medical people say he’s ready for the next step, he’ll take it,’’ Showalter said. “We’re not gonna push it forward or pull it back.”

Other pitchers for the pen might be in Triple-A Syracuse or making their recovery.

Sam Coonrod has advanced in his recovery from a lat injury, according to Showalter, and is currently participating in bullpen sessions.

“He had a really good spring for us and probably would have made the club,’’ Showalter said of the 30-year-old, who appeared in the majors with the Giants and Phillies over the previous four seasons.

Nolan McLean, a two-way player who was selected 91st overall, and right-hander Kade Morris, who was selected 101st overall, were both signed by the Mets in the third round. A.J. Ewing, a shortstop selected 134th overall in the fourth round of compensation, was also signed, it was also reported.

Although it’s uncertain if Diaz will be able to return this season, the fact that his knee has been reacting well to training is encouraging. The start of Diaz’s throwing program will be the next significant step, but an exact date is not yet known.
