Mets Announcer Gary Cohen Blames Manager Buck Showalter For The Team’s Horrific Loss Against Phillies

The New York Mets, who have the biggest payroll of any club in the league, have been arguably the most disappointing team in all of baseball this season, languishing below.500. Buck Showalter, the manager of the New York Mets, seems to be in hot water, and the team’s most recent defeat to the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday afternoon will not make matters any better.

One of the biggest letdowns of the 2023 MLB season has been the New York Mets, and that narrative has only intensified in the wake of their humiliating loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday.

In case you missed it, New York lost the game 7-6 after giving up four runs on only one hit in the bottom of the eighth inning. That brutal inning included three walks, two hit batters and an ugly error.

Gary Cohen, the Mets’ announcer, made it clearly obvious on Sunday that not all losers are created equally.

“The Mets’ 42nd loss of the year is their most horrific,” Cohen said after their 7-6 loss, which included a uniquely brutal eighth-inning collapse.

“Buck Showalter tried to stay away from his best relievers, and the Mets paid the price.”

Cohen was alluding to Showalter’s use of the bullpen in the dreadful eighth inning, when closer David Robertson watched from the bullpen rather than the mound while Josh Walker and Jeff Brigham failed to perform.

The part that has Mets supporters the most up in arms is perhaps Cohen’s last remark regarding Showalter. David Robertson, a former All-Star reliever, had served as the Mets’ setup man for the majority of the season, but Showalter decided not to utilize him. Fans naturally expressed their annoyance on social media over this choice.

When Showalter was questioned about the eighth inning after the game, he didn’t exactly accept responsibility for his choice to not utilize his best relievers.

“What else can we do? I was hoping just like last night that we could’ve stretched every out we can with everybody we got. They are capable of doing the job, they just didn’t today.”

After dropping to 35-42 on Sunday, the Mets are now 15 games behind the Atlanta Braves for fourth place in the NL East.

The Mets, who are now in fourth place and 15 games behind the division-leading Braves, were thought by some to win the NL East.
