Harrison Butker, the kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs, kicked off controversy over the weekend at Benedictine College during his graduating speech. Butker made a number of comments in his speech that were sharply criticized for being misogynistic, homophobic, and anti-Semitic. This caused a huge outcry on social media and prompted an NFL response.
His congratulating the female graduates while implying that getting married and starting a family would be the most exciting aspect of their futures was one of his remarks that particularly infuriated people.

The controversy arises from heightened scrutiny of the remarks made by public individuals and the ideals they uphold. Though Butker has always been outspoken about his Catholic faith and has held conservative opinions, the public’s outrage has increased in response to his most recent remarks.

Butker used a statement from Taylor Swift in his lecture to attack Catholic priests who overextend themselves in an attempt to win over their parishioners, arguing that “familiarity breeds contempt.” His insulting comments on women’s ambitions for careers in addition to this infuriated a lot of his admirers.

After spending four years playing basketball in Memphis, Tennessee’s Rhodes College, and graduating in 2016, his wife, Isabelle, is a native of Georgia. The two remained together throughout college. Following her relationship with Harrison, Isabelle became a Catholic. Soon after getting picked by the NFL, he proposed to her in May of 2017.
On April 5, 2018, they tied the knot at a Catholic church. The couple welcomed a daughter later on, but the kicker chose not to make her birth public. Their first child, James Augustine Butker, was born in January 2019.
