Marchand and Ourand Discusses: NBA’s Deal With Diamond Sports Group, MLB Offseason Approach & NFL Game In Germany

There is an agreement between the NBA and Diamond Sports Group that ensures local broadcasts for all 15 clubs, including the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Clippers, Cleveland Cavaliers, and San Antonio Spurs, among others, will be provided via Diamond’s regional sports networks.

With this arrangement, there would be no longer be any doubts about those clubs’ ability to finish the season and that RSNs would be able to fulfill their contractual duties. The NHL and Diamond Sports have been negotiating a comparable deal.

As it moves on with its bankruptcy procedures, Diamond Sports Group disclosed the arrangement in court files on Sunday. The business said that it has a term sheet with the league that permits modifications to its contracts with the 15 clubs it represents, limiting the duration of each individual broadcast deal to the 2023–24 campaign. There were agreements that extended until 2030. Bally Sports RSNs are operated by Diamond Sports Group.

This deal still has to be approved by the bankruptcy court.

“We have reached an agreement with Diamond that, upon court approval, will allow Diamond to continue distributing NBA games in its 15 markets for the 2023-24 season,” an NBA spokesperson said.

With the existing arrangement, which is divided between ESPN and Turner Sports, scheduled to expire at the end of the 2024–25 season, the NBA is now negotiating a new national television deal for its broadcast rights.

Teams will still need to go through this year and next before earning such gains, even if the new arrangement is projected to see the league receive a considerable rise in income over its present deal.

The deal provides some assurance to the NBA and its teams about game broadcasts for the current campaign.

This week’s Big Get guest, co-founder and CEO of TMRW Sports and TGL Mike McCarley, joins the program to share the tale of how he, Rory McIlroy, and Tiger Woods came to start this business. McCarley explains what fans can anticipate when it premieres on ESPN in January.

McCarley, a seasoned professional in the sports media industry, provides an overview of the market for sports media rights and shares his thoughts on the LIV Golf scandal that dominated the game this summer.
