Marc Andre Fleury Wears Native American Heritage Mask, Breaks NHL Guidelines

Marc-Andre Fleury, the wild goalie, is donning his personalized mask after all.

The NHL originally forbade the veteran from wearing a customized mask for his team’s Native American Heritage Night due to regulations prohibiting players from donning jerseys, masks, or decals on theme evenings.

Marc Andre Fleury Wears Native American Heritage Mask, Breaks NHL Guidelines

Prior to Minnesota’s game against the Avalanche on Friday, Wild goalkeeper Marc-André Fleury became the most recent player to break the rules by donning a specially made mask in honour of Native American Heritage Month.

Fleury commissioned the mask in memory of his Native American wife. The quotes from Fleury’s father and the names of his children are included into the mask’s design. On Friday, the Wild will honor Native American Heritage Day by playing the Avalanche.

This is the second significant incident over the NHL’s prohibition on customized equipment this season; the first occurred in October when Coyotes defender Travis Dermott disobeyed a league-wide ban on Pride tape.

Although the league said the mask was against NHL regulation, Walsh previously acknowledged the league’s original decision to forbid the goalkeeper from using the mask and noted Fleury was even prepared to pay a fine for wearing the mask during warmups.

The mask was created by Mdewakanton Dakota artist Cole Redhorse Taylor, who also used Dakota language and included “Dakota Florals” into the design—Fleury goes by Flower.

According to a report by ESPN’s Greg Wyshinksi, Fleury won’t likely get in trouble for donning the mask.

“I was very humbled to represent my community and my family this way. The helmet will be up for auction after this weekend, all proceeds will go towards a Native American-led charity that assists with indigenous families in the (Minneapolis-St. Paul) area,” Redhorse Taylor wrote on Instagram.

Fleury’s record with the Wild through nine games this season is 3-4-2 with a.875 save percentage. The Wild have a 5–8–4 record and 14 points from 17 games, good for seventh place in the Central Division at the moment.
