Loss At Women’s Basketball World Cup, Later Mali Players Were Fighting

What Led To A Fight Between Mali Basketball Players

Following their defeat at the Women’s World Cup on Monday, tensions between two Mali basketball players were at an all-time high.

At the 2022 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Sydney, Australia, teammates Salimatou Kourouma and Kamite Elisabeth Dabou got into a physical brawl after their team’s 81-68 loss to Serbia, according to the New York Post.

The two were captured in a now-viral video punching one other while a reporter spoke to Serbian midfielder Sasa Cado. Then, other Malian players rush to the scene to diffuse the conflict before it worsens.

On Tuesday, the International Basketball Federation issued a statement about the incident.

FIBA acknowledged today that there was an altercation between Mali players in the mixed zone following the Group B game Serbia-Mali at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022,” the federation wrote.

“Following the incident, FIBA has opened an investigation,” the statement added. “Once the investigation is concluded, FIBA will decide on any applicable disciplinary measures.”

The video was obtained by Serbian media during a player interview, and one player even made a couple of haymaker attempts before other players rushed in to break up the unpleasant scene.

Salimatou Kourouma of Mali and Kamite Elisabeth Dabou were captured on camera fighting after their team’s Women’s World Cup loss to Serbia, 81-68.

Salimatou Kourouma and Kamite Elisabeth Dabou’s altercation is the subject of an inquiry by FIBA, the world basketball regulatory body.

Given that Mali’s dreadful squad has lost each of its four games by an average margin of 30 points, both players are scoring less than 10 points each game.

Mali lost to Australia earlier in the tournament by an incredible 60 points.

The battle, sadly, did not help the Mali team’s performance at the Women’s Basketball World Cup. They fell 88-65 against Canada in their final match of the competition on Tuesday, leaving them with five losses and no victories as they returned to Africa.
