After rumours surfaced that Luis Diaz’s parents had been abducted in Colombia, Liverpool said that they were “aware of an ongoing situation” involving the family.

The 26-year-old’s father is still missing, according to Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who made the announcement on social media that his mother had been located near Barrancas.

Diaz’s well-being “will continue to be our immediate priority,” according to Liverpool.

“It is our fervent hope that the matter is resolved safely and at the earliest possible opportunity,” the organization stated.

Diaz was not included on Liverpool’s matchday roster for their Sunday Premier League matchup with Nottingham Forest.

Jurgen Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, described it as a “worrying situation for all of us”.

“We continue in the search for the father,” he added.

“From the moment the attorney general’s office learned of the kidnapping of the parents of the Colombian player Luis Diaz, in the Barrancas sector of La Guajira, a specialised team of prosecutors, police and military personnel have been working to find the location of these people, clarify the facts and find those responsible,” Colombia’s attorney general’s office said on X.

General William Salamanca, the director of Colombian police, has sent officers and intelligence operatives to handle the issue, according to an AFP report.

The Liverpool on Sunday issued a statement saying they were “aware of an ongoing situation involving the family of Luis Diaz in Colombia.”

According to reports, the military and police in Colombia worked together to conduct roadblocks and search operations in order to halt and identify motorcyclists. Díaz’s mother was freed by the captors without any injury after persuasion from law enforcement.

“She is in good health, scared, but she is fine,” a source told Semana. “They took the father away on a motorcycle, they took him out of the car and took him along the trails there.”
