Kyle Shanahan Still Adamant On Bringing Back Star QB Tom Brady

The relationship between Tom Brady and the San Francisco 49ers was more than just a fantasy.

Coach Kyle Shanahan of San Francisco provided further details regarding his team’s purported interest in the former quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New England Patriots, highlighting how “serious” he was about the possible trade last summer.

Despite having a first-round draft pick in Trey Lance, 49ers starter Brock Purdy was recovering from an injury sustained in the NFC championship game against the Philadelphia Eagles, so Shanahan thought about adding Brady.

At last, Shanahan has. Peter King ventured to say what so many others had hesitated to say in a ride-to-work interview for his Football Morning in America: Hey, were you serious about attempting to contract Tom Brady to be the starting quarterback in 2023?

The investigation had the opposite impact of those who declined to go there during news conferences out of concern about upsetting the head coach of the club they follow.

An ESPN article mentioned that San Francisco wanted to sign Brady.

Shanahan said to King, “I’m glad you asked me that question.”

Shanahan did not take long to verify that his squad was indeed interested in the seasoned quarterback.

Shanahan responded, “Yes, I was serious about it,” about Brady’s contract.

“As we talked, I’m looking at Brock, and he’s got his arm in a sling, and I really am not sure I’ve got a quarterback who’s going to be ready for the start of the 2023 season,” Shanahan detailed. “That started all of this.”

Shanahan kept Purdy in the loop regarding his plans, and he tried to put a positive spin on it for the second-year quarterback.

“I actually thought it was giving Brock the biggest compliment,” Shanahan said. “I let him know he’s our guy long-term. No question. And if Tom Brady wanted to come here and start for one year, that’s the only way you’re not starting when you’re healthy this year. That’s pretty cool. I wanted to assure him, ‘Don’t worry. You’re our guy. But how cool would it be if Tom Brady would be the quarterback here for one season? How cool would it be for you to learn from him?’

“I mean, if Brock never got hurt, this wouldn’t have been a consideration at all. I’d never have brought it up. But I’ve got to think about the team. What if he’s not ready in September?”

Given that Kirk Cousins is just a few weeks away from being an unrestricted free agency, it would appear from that response that Shanahan will not be attempting to bring the two back together. It would appear to make it quite evident that Purdy is the right man, at least till 2024.

And if Purdy performs well in the Super Bowl, Shanahan will find it much easier to resist the lure of other possibilities. If the 49ers win, the matter will be resolved once and for all.

The 49ers’ attempts to sign Brady were obviously unsuccessful because he did not reprise his act of retirement and unretirement from the previous offseason. Rather, Sam Darnold and Brandon Allen were signed by San Francisco to compete with Purdy and Lance as quarterback.
