Kyle Shanahan In His Defence

Kyle Shanahan ought to have been prepared to answer. Trey Lance, the prized young quarterback for the 49ers, had suffered a major injury for the second time in two years after seeing extensive action in the run game. Was running Lance up the belly really necessary?

Lance was hurt late in the first quarter of their Sunday 27-7 victory over the Seahawks during a quarterback power play on second-and-eight.

Despite the resounding nature of their victory, Shanahan described the injury as a “sad moment” and claimed it was “sobering” when the players entered the locker room. Nevertheless, he was unwavering in his defence of his play-call.

“Every time a guy gets hurt, I regret having made that call. That was something we intended to do and would keep doing”, according to Shanahan.

It’s a football play we believe in, and it gives him a chance to succeed in this league,” the author said.

When Kyle Shanahan was questioned about it by multiple reporters following Lance’s tragic ankle injury on Sunday, he was angered by the very notion. “Is that what you mean when you ask if it would have been better if it had been second and four?”

A reporter who said a QB power run on second and long was unwise was questioned by Shanahan. Deebo Samuel gained 50 yards earlier in the game thanks to the identical play design, according to Shanahan. It was left unmentioned that Samuel is also employed as a running back.

When the question concerning the play was posed to him a third time, Kyle Shanahan eventually lost his cool. He asked, “Didn’t I just answer that?” before adding:

Watch any other teams in this league, guys? Buffalo consistently engages in it. It’s a fairly typical play with their quarterback. It’s terrible that [Lance] injured his ankle on it, but it’s a typical running play in football. You guys ought to keep an eye on some others.
