Shohei Ohtani was anticipated to bring the success of his recent World Baseball Classic pitching and batting for his native nation over to his squad.
Know Tungsten Arm O’Doyle The Fictional Player Ohtani Is Compared With
The Los Angeles Angels, who haven’t advanced farther than the regular season since 2014, field the Japanese superstar. The Angels are viewed by fans all around the world as serial underachievers despite having two players—Ohtani and teammate Mike Trout—who have won the MVP and Rookie of the Year Awards.
Despite how annoying this is for Angels supporters, some have managed to find humour in the team’s conundrum. A fan posted a snarky statement in 2021 that said Ohtani’s performances could only be compared to those of “Tungsten Arm O’Doyle,” a made-up character that personified historical figures.

“Every time I see an Angels highlight it’s like ‘Mike Trout hit three homes runs and raised his average to .528 while Shohei Ohtani did something that hasn’t been done since ‘Tungsten Arm’ O’Doyle of the 1921 Akron Groomsmen, as the Tigers defeated the Angels 8-3′” – matttomic

“Shohei Ohtani. He has allowed the lowest batting average against (.152) with runners in scoring position over the last three seasons among starting pitchers. #GoHalos #OpeningDay” – Inside Edge
Who is Tungsten Arm O’Doyle?
Please welcome Tungsten Arm O’Doyle. It’s a strange moniker that sounds like something a baseball player from the game’s early years may have had. And many might be excused for thinking he would have been an exceptional player for the 1921 Akron Groomsmen.

However, Tungsten Arm O’Doyle was never a player. The Akron Groomsmen have never existed as a team. Instead, it was only Matt English’s smart Twitter fabrication. English sent a tweet on May 17, 2021, that unquestionably merits its own wing in the Internet Hall of Fame.
To be a “Tungsten Arm” game, Ohtani — ideally Ohtani and Trout — must accomplish something extraordinary, according to English. The Angels must also lose, ideally to a poor club. That is, in my opinion, the purest form of the game “Tungsten Arm.”

The baseball community has mostly accepted the tweet. Now, users may enter the name of a fictional player and Baseball Reference will link to Ohtani.
And when the Tigers defeated the Angels 5-4 on September 7, 2022, despite home runs from Trout and Ohtani, Detroit seized the chance to reference the tweet’s allusion to the made-up game.
And it begins
every time I see an Angels highlight it's like "Mike Trout hit three homes runs and raised his average to .528 while Shohei Ohtani did something that hasn't been done since 'Tungsten Arm' O'Doyle of the 1921 Akron Groomsmen, as the Tigers defeated the Angels 8-3" https://t.co/MJ5SNedjXX

Even though the tweet has gained a lot of popularity, some people still don’t like it since they think it criticises the Angels. The fact that their club has consistently had a losing season and has never come close to taking first place in the AL West while having two of the best players in the game is seen as rubbing some fans the wrong way by certain supporters.
“I’m not going to say it’s an innocent tweet,” English said. “It is crapping on the Angels. … The reason it keeps getting retweeted is that it keeps happening.”
