Know LSU Freshman Flau’jae Johnson: A Basketball Star Who Also Raps!

19-year-old freshman LSU player Flau’Jae Johnson has already set herself as a superstar in Louisiana basketball but may soon find herself a spot in the state’s music history.

Her late father Jason Johnson, better known by his rap alias Camoflauge, who was shot just over five months before she was born, is the inspiration for her.

She was a four-star recruit in high school and the first McDonald’s All-American Kim Mulkey brought into the Lady Tigers’ programme. When she broke the school record for career points with more than 1,615, she was the sole female participant in the Iverson Classic and even had her legacy No. 4 jersey honoured at her alma mater, Sprayberry High School.

Now a student at LSU, she made her decision known with the publication of another original song, “All Falls Down,” which was followed by a music video featuring Baton Rouge’s own Lil Boosie.

Johnson is from Savanah, Georgia, but being a member of the starting five for LSU under Tickfaw native Kim Mulkey when they defeated Caitlin Clark and Iowa for the 102-85 National Championship permanently binds her to Louisiana’s cultural landscape. She has a vibrant personality both on and off the court for a player her age.

She is a triple threat on the floor for LSU’s compact three-guard team. She has a talent for spotting an available colleague to pass information to and a shooting range with handles. She is a rising musical star off the court who may soon receive assistance from Lil Wayne of New Orleans, who is widely regarded as the best rapper alive.

Lil Wayne said last week on ESPN’s Bird & Taurasi Show that he wants to work on a song with Johnson, a budding rapper with 17,489 monthly Spotify listeners and 144,000 YouTube followers.

She also already has a deal with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation record label.

“We’re about to connect musically soon,” Lil Wayne said on ESPN. “Be on the lookout for that.”

Flau’jae Johnson: A Basketball Star Who Also Raps!

Young Flau’jae Johnson was not wearing an LSU uniform or holding a basketball when the rap community first got to know her. She appeared in Season 3 of Jermaine Dupri’s reality series “Rap Game” on Lifetime. She stood out from the competition in her season alongside prominent performers like Fabolous, Rick Ross, and John John Da Don thanks to her intense competition and poetry.

John John Da Don, the owner of Bull Pen Battle Rap League, said he remembers meeting the emcee when she was a shorty.

“I remember being Flau’jae battle rap mentor on ‘The Rap Game’ and seeing how locked in she was on winning,” the battle emcee said. “This was before I knew she played basketball … but seeing her become a national champion makes all the sense in the world to me.”

“She is just an all-around pure talent and I believe once she sets her mind on something nothing can get in her way,” he added, before saying, “Congrats to Flau’jae & the LSU lady tigers on winning the 2023 NCAA WOMENS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.”

Flau’jae was also chosen for “America’s Got Talent,” another musical reality program, after the “Rap Game.” Although she impressed the judges with her song “Guns Down,” she didn’t receive the golden buzzer or four standing ovations until she stunned them with “I Can’t Lose.”

She was even cited by Simon Caldwell as one of his all-time favourite performances.

She was one of just 9 competitors to earn the golden buzzer, and while being ousted in the quarterfinals, she still left with the honour of being signed to Roc Nation.

She was advanced to judging cuts (season 13, episode 10), where she sang “I Can’t Lose,” another of her own rap songs. The performance won her the golden buzzer and four standing ovations.

There were nine acts in all that season with the golden buzzer.

Her initial song, “Letdown,” actually let her down, as it failed to garner enough votes to move her to the semifinals (season 13, episode 11).

In the preliminary round of “America’s Got Talent: All-Stars” (episode 6), she gave it another go and rapped Lauryn Hill’s “Ready or Not.”

Unfortunately, the Superfans were not ready for her, and once more, she didn’t receive enough votes to be in the top three for the evening.

She now has over a dozen hits, her first release in 2017 titled “Can You Hear Me Now” and her latest release in January 2023 titled “Big 4.”

Flau’jae is now at the top in a new way, as an athlete for the 2023 NCAA Championship squad

On Sunday, Apr. 2, her team beat out Iowa State for the title. After they won, the arena filled up with cheers, excitement, and the LSU Freshwoman’s song “Big 4” played in celebration.

Since joining the team, Johnson has started every game and has a game average of 11 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.2 steals. In Mulkey’s second season, she has helped the Tigers to a 34-2 record, blending in well with players like Alexis Morris and Angel Reese and leading the team to its first-ever NCAA national championship victory.
