Planning and funding
From 1970 until 2000, Three Rivers Stadium was shared by the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Following conversations about the Pirates establishing a full-time baseball stadium, a proposal to transform Three Rivers Stadium into a full-time football facility was made. Although the Steelers’ owners were opposed to the notion, it was used as a “fallback position” if talks for a new stadium fell down.
The Steelers’ owners claimed that failure to build a new stadium would jeopardize the franchise’s ability to recruit players who would otherwise join with other teams, such as the Steelers’ division rivals, who had all just built new football-only stadiums.

The stadium’s naming rights were bought by the H. J. Heinz Company in June 2001. According to the terms of the agreement, Heinz will pay the Steelers a total of $57 million until 2021, with the “57” being a deliberate allusion to Heinz 57. Despite Heinz’s later announcement in 2015 of its acquisition of Kraft Foods Group to establish Kraft Heinz Company, the stadium’s name was kept.
