Kendrick Perkins Compares Joel Embiid’s Unprecedented Performance To Wilt Chamberlain, Comes Back Into NBA MVP Conversation

Embiid put on his most impressive performance of the season on Saturday night, even though his club had just suffered a defeat to the Hawks in Atlanta 48 hours before. He established the tone right away by scoring 14 points in the first quarter against the same Hawks club that had defeated the Sixers just two days before. Over the course of the next 36 minutes, Embiid would build on that promising beginning, scoring a game-high 42 points while adding ten rebounds, six assists, and two blocks. And maybe most significantly, the Sixers won 121-109 to raise their record to 6-7.

When asked by the media why he appeared to be pulling at his shoulder the whole game after that outstanding performance, Joel Embiid gave a worrying health update. I can’t lift my arm up on some days, Embiid said. “I don’t know what happened,” he added. “When I go block shots, I really feel it. I don’t know what’s going on, but it’s whatever.”

Kendrick Perkins Compares Joel Embiid’s Unprecedented Performance To Wilt Chamberlain

Kendrick Perkins compared Joel Embiid’s monster effort in the Philadelphia 76ers’ win over the Utah Jazz to that of NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain.

Perkins tweeted the following about Embiid’s historical performance:

“Joel Embiid must’ve thought he was Wilt Chamberlain in 1961 tonight. Look it up if you need clarity. Carry on…”

Chamberlain often put up numbers like these during his peak years. The former NBA champion amassed multiple individual records, and Embiid did the same in Sunday’s game between the 76ers and Jazz.

In the final frame, the Sixers scored 27 points as a team, and Embiid scored 26 of them. Yes, you did read that right. Embiid made 7 of 8 field goal attempts and 12 of 15 free throw attempts over the final 12 minutes, which was just enough to help Philadelphia win 105-98. With the game set on Rookie difficulty, his final stats against Utah resembled those of a 2K stat line: 59 points, 11 rebounds, 8 assists, and 7 blocks in 37 minutes. In the process, Embiid made NBA history by being the first player to ever have 50 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 blocks in a single game.

The Sixers’ 2-0 weekend has at least temporarily calmed the waters, regardless of whether the back-to-back performances serve as a catalyst for more success. Additionally, it reinstated Embiid to the MVP discussion.
