Kara Lawson: A Trailblazing Journey from WNBA Stardom to Coaching Greatness
Kara Lawson, a name known for basketball excellence, had embarked on a transformative journey, leaving a mark on basketball as both a player and a coach. From her early days as a high school standout to her current role as head coach of the Duke Blue Devils women’s basketball team, Lawson’s passion and dedication have shaped her into a groundbreaker in the world of college basketball.
Lawson’s basketball journey began at West Springfield High School, where her talent and determination propelled her team to two state championships. Her performances gathered recognition as a WBCA All-American and laid down the foundation for a coaching career.
Taking the opportunity to play for Pat Summitt at the University of Tennessee, Lawson thrived on the Lady Vols basketball team. With a good work ethic and an innate understanding of basketball, she played a huge role in the Final Four appearances. Lawson’s impact was not only limited to the court, she graduated with a degree in finance as well.

Following her collegiate success, Lawson transitioned to the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). Selected as the fifth overall pick in the 2003 draft, Lawson quickly showcased her versatility and skills. A trade then sent her to the Sacramento Monarchs where she helped the team get a championship in 2005. Her leadership on the court made her a fan favorite.
Lawson’s basketball expertise went further than the WNBA, as she represented the United States in an international competition. in 2008, she participated in the Olympics, where she played a role in securing the gold medal for the US. The tournament showcased her versatility and ability to rise to the occasion.
Following her playing career, Lawson transitioned to coaching, starting her journey as an assistant coach for the Boston Celtics in the NBA. With the challenges and opportunity coaching in the NBA presented, she was able to display her ability to connect with players, earning their respect and admiration.
In 2020, Lawson was appointed the head coach of the Duke Blue Devils women’s basketball team. Under Lawson’s guidance, the Blue Devils have undergone a significant transformation. Her emphasis on defense led Duke to be one of the top-ranked defensive teams in the country. Lawson had reinvigorated the program, leading them to success.
