Early on in Julian Edelman’s time with the Patriots, he found himself in Tom Brady’s bad books.

Julian Edelman Shares The Story of How Tom Brady On First-Ever NFL Practice Made Him Cry

After being selected by the Patriots in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft, Edelman, a former Super Bowl MVP who went on to become one of Brady’s most dependable receivers in New England, discussed the challenges of making the switch from college quarterback to NFL wideout during a recent episode of his “Games With Names” podcast.

“First pass ever from Tom, they put in a package with four receivers, a four-wide group. They gave me a play and — I’d never played receiver, but they created a package for me and they’re like, ‘Alright, Edelman, get in,’” he said.

This incident occurred at Edelman’s first-ever NFL practise in 2009, during his rookie season with the New England Patriots.

“And I run like a hook route, and Tom darts it on me and I tried to run before I had it, because I wanted to, you know, I wanted to do something with it. I dropped the ball. ”

He goes ‘Catch the f*cking ball Julian!’ I went home and cried. I felt pretty sh*tty for four days. It took me so long to earn his trust after that f*cking play. It took me like three years to earn his trust.”

What a rocky beginning to your NFL career, man. You’re already at odds with the greatest quarterback in history, and on the first day?

Fortunately, Edelman and Brady were able to iron out the wrinkles in their chemistry early on, and they went on to become one of the league’s most productive teams, winning three Super Bowls.

After the 2020 season, Edelman, 36, announced his retirement. He played for the Patriots his entire career.

Brady played with the Patriots for 20 seasons before concluding his playing career with the Buccaneers, following in the footsteps of Edelman.
