John Flaherty Jinxed The Yankees Game At Worst Time Possible

Fans are constantly on the lookout for instances of “the announcer’s jinx” since commentators are now more prominent than ever thanks to social media. As New York was humiliated 8-7 by the Rockies on infielder Alan Trejo’s walk-off home run, Yankees announcer John Flaherty became the latest portent of disaster.

John Flaherty Jinxed The Yankees Game At Worst Time Possible

On Sunday, with the score tied at 7-7, Yankees pitcher Ron Marinaccio wound up to pitch to Rockies infielder Alan Trejo with a 2-0 count.

“Trejo, 120 at-bats, does not have a home run this year,” Yankees announcer John Flaherty — pinch-hitting as the play-by-play man — said on the broadcast.

Trejo launched a ball to left-center field, then blasted only his sixth home run in three seasons to secure an 8-7 victory and hand the Yankees a humiliating loss.

“Until now,” Flaherty added as Trejo ran his victory lap around the bases.

The game-winning shot was Trejo’s first home run since Sept. 28, 2022, against the Giants.

Trejo’s sixth home run in three seasons and his first since going deep against the Giants on September 28, 2022, was the game-winning blast.

The defeat capped a lackluster opening series for the Yankees following the All-Star break, in which New York slid to a tie for last place in the AL East after dropping two of three games.

Not all of Flaherty’s poor calls were about the jinx.

The former Yankees catcher also initially said Jones’ opposite-field blast was “popped up.”

Michael Kay and Ryan Ruocco were both unable to go to Denver, so commentator Flaherty filled in. He remarked, “Popped up… more than popped up as that ball is driven the other way for a two-run shot.”

The Yankees were knocked to the bottom of the AL East standings, where they are temporarily tied for last with the Red Sox, after Colorado won the series, taking two of the three games.
