Joe Montana Speculates the Future of Jimmy Garoppolo With San Francisco 49ers

JimmThere aren’t many good memories to remember that the New England Patriots had selected Jimmy Garoppolo in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. At the time, the Eastern Illinois quarterback was seen as Tom Brady’s natural successor. However, since then, he seemed to have a career arc, unlike any other passer the league has seen.

The Patriots traded Garoppolo to Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers for a second-round pick three years after drafting him. He guided San Francisco to come within moments of winning Super Bowl LIV in his only full season as a starter. But, a little more than a year later, Garoppolo’s presence on the Niners’ roster is far from certain.

What’s waiting for Garoppolo?

Recently, former Niners quarterback Joe Montana appeared in ESPN’s show, “First Take”, where he spoke about Garoppolo’s future.

The “comeback kid”, as he is widely referred to, said, “My guess is, because of his age they’ll keep him and give him another chance at it. This is just my feeling. I don’t I stay away from down there, I stay away from football at this point but I think like you said when he’s in there that he’s had they had pretty good success in winning. And um I think they just try to keep them healthy and see what they can get from there. And if it continues along this way then I would imagine they try to make a change because it’s hard to get any kind of consistency offensively without you know with moving quarterbacks around in and out no matter what they say. It’s just hard to do.”

Speculations are in the air.

San Francisco mortgaged its future earlier this offseason to jump up to nine slots to the third overall selection in the draft. No one generally spends that much money and move that high unless for a top quarterback prospect. That aroused the question, “what does this mean for Jimmy Garoppolo?”

Although 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan would rather go existential than commit to having Jimmy Garoppolo on the team this season, he did say that Garoppolo would be a valuable player to have around in his camp during his recent press conference.

Since the 49ers moved up to No. 3 in the draft, it was assumed that San Francisco would retain Garoppolo to help improve the prospect before breaking ways with him next offseason. And it is clear after the draft that Jimmy will stay with the Niners for at least this season. What happens next year is a mystery yet to unfold.

Garoppolo will stay

The 49ers didn’t want to trade their QB because, even after a terrible few minutes in the Super Bowl, a weak Week 1 showing in 2020, and a slew of injuries, Garoppolo remains a starting-calibre NFL quarterback. Such a quality is difficult to come by, and teams become desperate to get hold of players with such potential.

As it stands, San Francisco seems to be content with keeping their quarterback as of now. However, if a team like the Chicago Bears or Patriots approaches next year and gives Jimmy Garoppolo a first-round or second-round pick, it might be difficult for the Niners not to trade him. However, that’s not happening anytime soon.
