Joe Montana Accepts Tom Brady Has Surpassed Him as Goat

When people think of the greatest of all time, the first name that immediately springs to mind is quarterback Tom Brady. When it comes to the NFL, determining who the “GOAT” is can be difficult. Many who have followed the sport since the 2000s suggest that Tom Brady is the GOAT.

In February, Tom Brady won his NFL-record seventh Super Bowl, strengthening his claim to be the best quarterback in NFL history. The debate intensified recently when another all-time great, Joe Montana admitted that Brady is the greatest player of this time.

Montana recently appeared in ESPN’s show, “First Take”, where he was asked if Tom Brady is the GOAT. In response, the 64-year old did praise quarterbacks who competed prior to the NFL-AFL merger, noting that former Browns quarterback Otto Graham claimed seven championships in ten seasons. But, in the end, Montana admitted that Brady’s achievements remain unrivalled in football history.

Is Tom Brady the GOAT? “Yeah, definitely”

“I think Tom has, you know, taking his place on the top up there a long time ago. So he’s had a tremendous career. He’s fun to watch and yeah there’s always everybody always contests over that. But I think look what Tom’s been able to accomplish in his time that he’s played. I think he’s (Tom Brady), you know, puts him definitely up there at the top of the list. There’s a lot of great guys as I said before me, even you know go back to Otto Graham. Won 10 or 11 championships. So it’s hard to compare them but you know if you’re looking at it yeah definitely at that point (Brady is the GOAT).”

Montana: the original GOAT

Montana could very well be considered an all-time great among quarterbacks. With the 49ers, he won four Super Bowls, as well as two MVP honours and eight Pro Bowl nominations. Montana led the 49ers to a 100–39 record in 13 seasons, with 40,551 passing yards and 273 touchdowns.

He retired after the 1994 season with 40,551 passing yards and 273 touchdowns. The former quarterback would already be considered the GOAT if it weren’t for Brady. Even Brady himself was Montana’s fan during his childhood.

Tom Brady grew up in Northern California and idolized Montana as a 49ers fan. Reportedly, the seven-time Super Bowl winner also dressed up as “Joe Cool” for Halloween, 38 years ago. He was only six years old at the time.

Tom Brady is special

Brady’s professional background is unrivalled. In 19 seasons as a starter, he has appeared in 10 Super Bowls and has the most career touchdown passes by any quarterback. Only Drew Brees has more passing yards, but Tom Brady will most likely overtake Brees in 2021.

The 43-year old will get another chance to make history in 2021. He will be back on the field For the last year of his two-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Nevertheless, we might see a contract extension, given the success the franchise has achieved with Brady in their roster.
