Jim Irsay Warns Teams About Tampering Regulations For Contacting Andrew Luck
Jim Irsay, the owner of the Colts, wants it known that Andrew Luck is off-limits.
The 33-year-old Luck, who had three seasons left on his deal when he retired in 2019, technically remains the Colts’ property. After he left, the contract expired, making the Colts the legal owner of his rights in the event that he ever decided to play again in the NFL.
Jim Irsay Warns Teams About Tampering Regulations For Contacting Andrew Luck
After learning over the weekend that the Washington Commanders had contacted them prior to dealing for Carson Wentz, Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay issued a caution to other NFL clubs about possible interference involving former quarterback Andrew Luck.

Irsay issued a general message on Twitter on Sunday, urging all teams to refrain from contacting Luck on a future NFL comeback.
“If any NFL Team attempted to contact Andrew Luck (or any associate of him)… to play for their Franchise – it would be a clear Violation of the League’s Tampering Policy,” wrote Irsay on Twitter.

Irsay’s tweet, though, appeared to be in response to an ESPN story regarding the Commanders’ reliance on second-year quarterback Sam Howell this year.
Although the NFL’s tampering regulations are somewhat ambiguous, it is noted that direct communication with a player is not necessary for a violation to take place.

The rules on tampering reads, “Any public or private statement of interest, qualified or unqualified, in a player of another club to that player’s agent or representative, or to a member of the news media, is a violation.”
According to a Colts source, the organization is unsure of the nature of the talks but is interested in finding out more information about what actually happened and whether any tampering took place.

Following a protracted NFL investigation into allegations of tampering between 2019 and 2022 involving improper conversations with Tom Brady and Sean Payton and claims that former head coach Brian Flores was given orders to purposefully lose games, Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross was suspended by the league and docked two draft picks in August.
