Jets Owner Woody Johnson Doubles Down On Jets’ Plans To Acquire Quarterback Aaron Rodgers

For the first time since reports about a potential relationship between the Jets and Aaron Rodgers started to circulate, Jets owner Woody Johnson was questioned publicly about the speculations, but he tried to keep his mouth shut regarding the team’s pursuit of a seasoned quarterback this summer.

Jets Owner Woody Johnson Doubles Down On Jets’ Plans To Acquire Quarterback Aaron Rodgers

Before the NFL Honors event on Thursday, Johnson spoke up to ESPN’s Dianna Russini on the red carpet about New York’s troubles at quarterback in 2022 and how the front management is scouting the market for a potential upgrade this spring.

“The weakness right now is in the quarterback position,” Johnson said. “Whether it was management or whatever, everybody kind of regressed a little bit so what we’re gonna do is we are gonna look for an experienced quarterback to come in and help us and help develop these other young players.”

Russini added that there were a lot of fascinating quarterback choices available, and Johnson was asked if he was particularly interested in Rodgers.

“I think you want the best quarterback you can get to lead the Jets,” Johnson answered. “I think with a good quarterback and our great defence… and a good running game. Our special teams are really good. I think it’s plug-and-play, when a quarterback comes in it’s kind of an ideal situation.”

Johnson cut off any further discussion of the Packers star Rodgers when Russini inquired about the price for him, claiming that he was unable to discuss a player who was under contract with another team.

Since the Packers’ season ended on January 8, Rodgers has not made a decision on his future in the NFL, but there have been whispers that he would relocate to New York this summer. When Nathaniel Hackett, who had previously worked with Rodgers in Green Bay before serving as the head coach of the Broncos for one season, was hired by the Jets as offensive coordinator, speculation only intensified.

“Love Hack. Hack is my guy. Love him and Megan and the kids,” Rodgers said of his former offensive coordinator on the Pat McAfee Show Tuesday. “They’re really special to me. We really bonded when he was in Green Bay. He made it fun. He made the room fun. He made the weeks fun.”

The 39-year-old Rodgers has made it plain that he intends to take his time before determining where or even if he will play in 2023. The Jets will undoubtedly be one of a few clubs waiting in line in the event that the four-time MVP decides to approach the Packers about a trade.
