Jets Are Starting Zach Wilson At QB, Improvement Is A Necessity

Robert Saleh had to fill the future of the New York Jets quarterback room the day after Aaron Rodgers suffered an Achilles injury. He chose Zach Wilson!

Jets Are Starting Zach Wilson At QB, Improvement Is A Necessity

“We’re gonna look through some things, but I do want to make it very clear: Zach’s our quarterback. We’ve got a lot of faith in Zach; we’re really excited about his opportunity. We’re rollin’ with Zach, and [we’re] excited for him.”

The New York Jets have confirmed that Zach Wilson will start as quarterback against the Patriots at MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Wilson took over as the Jets’ starting quarterback early in Week 1 when Aaron Rodgers suffered an Achilles rupture and was ruled out for the season. Over the first two weeks of the season, he has been one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL.

Wilson’s 53.3 QB rating is the lowest in the league. He also has the most interceptions among quarterbacks, with four. A number of them have come on extremely awful passes, such as this bad read against the Buffalo Bills in Week 1.

This is how poor quarterbacking looks. Only five quarterbacks were more successful on fewer than 40% of their plays. Only nine quarterbacks had a sack on more than 8% of their dropbacks. No other quarterback in the NFL had an inaccurate pass on more than 18 percent of his passes.

Putting pressure on Wilson has been crucial in pressuring him to make mistakes. In four games, New England has sacked him 11 times. Only the Buffalo Bills (12 sacks) have more in Wilson’s career. In four games versus Wilson since 2021, the Patriots have been credited with 21 QB hits.

However, with Wilson as the quarterback, the offence certainly has a ceiling. The inexperienced quarterback continues to struggle with accuracy, fumbles, and just keeping drives going. Not only did the Jets end with only 10 points on 11 offensive possessions, but they also turned the ball over on three of their last three drives due to interceptions.

While some members of the media are supporting Wilson, citing the Jets’ poor offensive line and the rookie quarterback’s improved footwork, his turnovers and lack of execution aren’t any better than they were last season.
