“Jayson Tatum can reach the level of Kevin Durant” – NBA legend Tracy McGrady highlights Boston Celtics talisman’s potential
Jayson Tatum has had an incredible 2021-22 NBA season so far. The Boston Celtics superstar has been the go-to man for his team as they clinched the Eastern Conference title. Now, Tatum and the Celtics are hoping to edge out the Golden State Warriors in a bid to take the NBA Championship back to Boston.
During the course of the regular season, Tatum averaged 26.9 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game. The 24-year-old is continuing his impressive form in the playoffs as well, averaging 26.3 points, 6.6 rebounds and 6.1 assists in 20 games.
In fact, Taytum’s incredible performances have led many to believe that he could be the man who brings the NBA Championship back to Boston for the first time since 2008. And one other former NBA player, Tracy McGrady, has also showered praise on Tatum and his potential.

Tracy McGrady waxes lyrical on Jayson Tatum
While speaking to NBC Sports Washington on Tuesday, McGrady, a seven-time NBA All-Star, discussed Jayson Tatum’s ability and even likened the Celtics star to two-time NBA champion Kevin Durant. The 43-year-old said, “I think he (Tatum) can be really good. We’re talking K.D. status. I think the kid has the potential to be that good. He’s already showing glimpses of that in his young NBA career. I think he has the ability to win multiple championships, and be an MVP of the NBA. I think he has that ability.”
Durant, who is a 12-time All-Star and a two-time NBA Finals MVP, won two NBA Championships with the Golden State Warriors. He left the Warriors in 2019 to join the Brooklyn Nets. Meanwhile, Tatum is still looking for his first NBA Championship and has received three All-Star honours. It seems that Tatum is a long way away from reaching Durant’s status, but he is certainly on his way.
The Celtics and Tatum are currently locked at 1-1 in this year’s NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors. Tatum managed 28 points in Game 2 vs the Warriors but couldn’t help his team over the line. Game 3 of the series takes place on Wednesday, June 8th.
