One of the greatest college football programs in Japanese history, Nihon University, is ending the program entirely due to the players’ widespread marijuana usage. According to the Yomiuri Shibun, the board decided on Wednesday afternoon to officially dissolve the squad.
“Rampant marijuana use” is relative.
This year, three members of the Phoenix squad from Nihon University—who has won the national college championship 21 times—have been detained on suspicion of using marijuana. Nihon University has chosen to disband the squad, and vice president Yasuhiro Sawada and president Takeo Sakai have also resigned, according to reports from public broadcaster NHK and other media.

The team’s operations were previously stopped by the university in September when a police raid of the club’s hostel resulted in an arrest. Although it is not very popular in Japan, American football has a rich history on the college level.
It is a huge thing when even one player consumes marijuana in Japan because of the country’s extremely severe and perplexing rules against narcotics, including cannabis. When there are several players involved, as there are in this case, it becomes much more significant.
Nestled in the Chiyoda City neighborhood of Tokyo, Nihon University is home to almost 70,000 students. The school’s 83-year-old American football squad is regarded as a dominant force in the sport.
