During the 2017 World Junior Championships in Helsinki, Finland, Leerdam won the title of junior world champion. She came in second place behind her countrywoman Joy Beune at the 2018 Championships in Salt Lake City, United States, the following year.

She won both the 1000- and 1500-meter ISU Junior World Cup competitions in the 2017–18 season. She also won the junior sprint title in the Netherlands. Jutta became a professional in 2018 and joined Team IKO.

Leerdam has won two 1000m global titles (2020 and 2023), a silver medal in the distance at the 2022 Winter Olympics, and a gold medal at the 2022 global Sprint Championships since being professional. Leerdam signed a deal with Team Jumbo-Visma in 2022, and it expires in 2024. Beginning in 2017, Leerdam was linked to Dutch speed skater Koen Verweij. She revealed their breakup on her Instagram page on August 1, 2022.
