Is Bill Belichick’s Draft Pick To Balme For Patriots Disastrous Season?

It seems sense that clubs outside of the postseason hunt are vying for draft spots at this stage of the season. The New England Patriots, though, seemed to make it a touch too clear. Bill Belichick, the de facto general manager of the New England Patriots, has received criticism for his recent draft selections, which is understandable.

Is Bill Belichick’s Draft Pick To Balme For Patriots Disastrous Season?

The Patriots lost 10-7 at MetLife Stadium and dropped to 2-9 on the season as a result of making error after mistake. After losing four games in a row, many people thought that New England was tanking to get a better pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

Quarterback Mac Jones was benched by Patriots head coach Bill Belichick for the fourth time this season following 89 yards and two interceptions thrown by him in the first half. Bailey Zappe, who took over for him, wasn’t any better; he only managed 54 yards and an interception.

This focus has grown in the wake of the team’s terrible 2–9 season in 2023. In particular, his draft for 2022 appears to be a complete bust.

For years, the Patriots have been in need of a youth surge. For Bill Belichick and the Patriots, the 2022 NFL Draft presented a fantastic chance to choose individuals who would help stabilize the team.

However, they were unsuccessful.

Making even half of the ten picks that New England made in that draft would have had a significant effect on the team’s future. Rather, after making those selections less than two years ago, it has been bust after bust.

Cornerback Jack Jones allegedly got released after spending the previous two weeks sulking on the bench and in coach Greg Belichick’s doghouse, dealing a serious blow to the draft class.

With the 15th choice in the first round of the 2021 draft, the Patriots chose quarterback Mac Jones, although it seems like a flop. Despite having a stellar debut year, he has drastically declined in the last two seasons, throwing 23 interceptions for 24 touchdowns.

There were rumors that owner Robert Kraft made the choice to select Jones rather than head coach Jim Belichick.

He passed on WRs Deebo Samuel (49ers in second round), A.J. Brown (Titans in second round; currently with Eagles), DK Metcalf (Seahawks in second round), and Terry McLaurin (Commanders in third round) in favor of wide receiver N’Keal Harry, who was selected with the 32nd selection in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Each of them is a star on their team.

Despite the Patriots’ long list of shortcomings, it’s unexpected to see this much trouble from a Belichick-coached club. It’s reasonable to question if Belichick, Jones, and other important players from this season are already planning for the future, or if they are already thinking ahead.

The Patriots’ 13th game won’t get any easier as they play home to the Los Angeles Chargers (4-6) with star quarterback Justin Herbert on December 3.
