Ball was a five-star prospect who committed to UCLA, but due to eligibility issues, he decided to forgo playing collegiate basketball and play for the Illawarra Hawks of the National Basketball League (NBL) in Australia in 2019.

Scouts have criticized Ball for being selected in the second round and possibly never playing in the NBA. But because of his accomplishments, the Charlotte Hornets picked him third overall in the 2020 NBA Draft. Ball was chosen as the NBA Rookie of the Year following the 2020–21 regular season.
