Internet Reacts To Reports Suggesting Daniel Jones Seeking $45 Million Dollars In A New Contract

Daniel Jones, a fourth-year quarterback, is allegedly seeking a sizable pay raise beginning in 2023 and has reportedly changed agents ahead of a crucial bargaining time with the Giants.

Daniel Jones Seeking $45 Million Dollars In A New Contract

Jones has reportedly moved agency from CAA to Athletes First as he looks for a long-term contract in New York, according to many sources, the first of which was published by ESPN. Since the Giants selected him sixth overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, the previous agency has become his representative.

After the Giants’ decision not to exercise Jones’ fifth-year option, which would have been worth around $22.3 million, Jones now has the ability to renegotiate his contract before the 2023 season. The projected long-term contract before he switched agencies, according to ESPN on Monday, would be worth more than $35 million annually.

But according to a report by Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk, he is seeking more money than what New York has offered him to this point.

That’s a lot more than the $26.13 million over four seasons, including $4.19 million in 2022, that New York paid Jones for the remainder of his rookie contract, according to Spotrac. When he failed to guide the team to a winning record in any of his first three seasons, the Giants took a calculated gamble by declining to take up his fifth-year option.

Under first-year head coach Brian Daboll, Jones had his finest NFL campaign to date in 2022, achieving career highs in completions (317), attempts (472), completion percentage (67.2), and passing yards (3,205), while also tossing a career-low five interceptions and 15 touchdown passes. Also, he achieved career highs in both running touchdowns and yards (708) (seven).

He also led the Giants to their first winning record with him under center (9-6-1), as well as their first playoff victory (a 31-24 win over the Vikings) since the 2012 Super Bowl-winning team.

Next Move By Giants?

The Giants’ gamble will ultimately end up costing them more than what they could have spent in 2023 if they had exercised Daniel Jones’ fifth-year option — though the franchise still has options available to it moving forward.

With $43.33 million in salary space for the 2023 season, New York is presently ranked fourth in the NFL, according to Spotrac. It gives the Giants some flexibility going forward, but they will still need to focus on a number of pending free agents.

The Giants’ most likely course of action is to just tag Daniel Jones with a non-exclusive franchise tag, which would cost $32.4 million in 2023. New York would have two weeks from that date to apply the tag, although it might do so as soon as this Wednesday.

The Giants would have the option to match or reject any offer made to Daniel Jones by any club, which would then have to pay New York two games’ worth of salary as compensation. If the non-exclusive tag was placed on Jones, he would be free to negotiate with other teams.
