“I’ll be disappointed if there’s no woman head coach in 5 years” – NBA chief Adam Silver encourages women to take up head coaching jobs in league

Adam Silver has done a lot of good for the NBA since taking charge of the league. The NBA Commissioner now wants to provide equal opportunity to encourage women to take up head coaching jobs in a male-dominated league. There have been a total of 15 women as assistant coaches in the NBA in the 76-year history of the league. However, none made it as head coach of a team.

So far, many women have been interviewed for head coaching jobs in the NBA but a team is yet to have a female lead the franchise on the court. Nevertheless, Silver has claimed that he would hope to see a change in that pattern over the next half a decade.

What did Adam Silver say about women taking head coaching roles in NBA?

While speaking in an interview with Bonnie Bernstein on the NCAA podcast, Silver admitted that he would be disappointed if there were no women as head coaches in the NBA in the next five years. He said, “I would be hugely disappointed if, certainly, in five years we haven’t seen our first female head coach in the NBA.”

While Silver explained that he was delighted to see more females as NBA referees and assistant coaches in the league, he expressed his desire to continue supporting gender quality, “I’ve said this before, as much as professional sports has led, and the WNBA and NBA have led in certain areas, we’re a bit behind in this area. We should have more women head coaches. We should have a female head coach right now. We should have more women referees. It’s something we’re working very hard on right now.” he stated.
