“If Anything Were to Happen, It Would Probably Be on That Side”: Cleveland Cavaliers Star Admits to Potentially Joining Miami Heat Ahead of Cavs Move
Donovan Mitchell, a guard with the Cleveland Cavaliers, claimed on the “Old Man and the Three” podcast with J.J. Redick that he believed he would be dealt to the Miami Heat. Mitchell worked out with athletes like Darius Garland and Bam Adebayo this off-season.
Several teams were interested in Mitchell, who recently deleted the Jazz from his social media biographies on Twitter and Instagram. The Heat was one of those teams. Mitchell’s familiarity with Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo led many to believe that the Heat were the favorites to sign him.
They all worked out together throughout the offseason, and Mitchell partnered with Adebayo during the Miami Summer Pro League. Donovan Mitchell was moved to the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Miami Heat apparently never made an offer for him.

When asked who he worked out with this summer, Mitchell revealed how things turned out.
“D.G.,” Mitchell said. “But we didn’t know any of this was happening. So we would be working out, and I said this to somebody, I was like, man I’m working out Bam and others and I’m thinking like, ‘This is just preparing. This is what it’s going to look like.’ And D.G. is right here.”

“Miami, New York, where else?. Maybe Washington. Those were the three in my head that I thought, ‘Okay, if anything were to happen, it would probably be on that side.’”
The Heat had been connected to Mitchell over the offseason, but the team lacked the draft picks necessary to match the Utah Jazz’s acquisition of Mitchell from the Cleveland Cavaliers. Three unprotected first-round picks in the 2025, 2027, and 2029 NBA Drafts were given up by Cleveland. To sweeten the deal, they included selection swaps and a number of outstanding players.
