“I Was a Bit Stupid in That Fight”- Khamzat Chimaev Wants a Rematch Against Gilbert Burns to Show His ‘Real Skills’

Khamzat Chimaev made his UFC debut on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi last year. In a short period of time, ‘Borz’ not only fought multiple times in the UFC setting new records, but he also managed to garner a lot of attention around him for his devastating finishes as well as his high level of activity.

In his first few fights in the UFC, Chimaev absorbed barely any damage and none of his fights ever went past the second round. Therefore, when he was matched up with Gilbert Burns, most fans expected him to dominate the same way he had been thus far.

Unfortunately, that was not the case. Unlike his previous opponents, Burns is an elite competitor who had previously challenged for the welterweight strap. While a lot of the blame lies on Chimaev for fighting recklessly, it showed that there are levels in every sport and that ‘Borz’ has a bit of work to do before he can dethrone the champion, Kamaru Usman.

Khamzat Chimaev gives an honest assessment of his fight against Gilbert Burns

While speaking about his performance against Gilbert Burns in a recent interview he said, “Gilbert Burns was like one of the guys like his style is like so hard for me to fight because he is short and he is a grappler.”

‘Borz’ continued, “I am a wrestler and I am a boxer, but my boxing is better when the guys is taller like me not short…. I was bigger than Gilbert, but Gilbert was like different style. That is why it was difficult to fight with him…. I hope one day I can fight Gilbert again, I was a bit stupid in that fight just going forward you know didn’t show my footwork and didn’t show my real boxing skills.”

Khamzat Chimaev is now scheduled to take on Nate Diaz in September. Chimaev will not only fight in a five-round fight for the first time, but it will also be his first time headlining a UFC PPV event. The common consensus among fans is that Chimaev will get a quick stoppage win, it will be interesting to see how it really plays out.
