‘I Had to Handle It for You… Thank Me’- Kamaru Usman Berates Leon Edwards for His Backstage Altercation with Jorge Masvidal at UFC London
UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman will defend his strap once again when he rematches Leon Edwards on August 20, 2022 at UFC 278. The two men got re-acquainted with each other at the presser that went down on International Fight Week just hours before UFC 276 was set to go down in Las Vegas.
A major point of discussion was a run-in that Leon Edwards had with common rival Jorge Masvidal backstage at UFC London in 2019. Masvidal infamous hit Leon Edwards backstage and bloodied him after Edwards instigated an exchange with him. The ‘Three Piece and a Soda’ exchange will live on in infamy and Edwards has still never got the chance to write his wrong.
Kamaru Usman wants Leon Edwards to thank him
‘The Nigerian Nightmare’, who knocked out Jorge Masvidal cold at UFC 261, trolled Leon Edwards for the aforementioned incident. He told Edwards that he needed to be thanked since he knocked out Masvidal and inadvertently exacted revenge on behalf of the Brit.
“Listen, I like you,” Usman said. “You my man. I’ve done a lot for you. That man went back there in London, he put his hands on you, and you guys didn’t do nothing, so I had to handle it for you – that’s why I had to knock his head to the moon. I got him for you, so I like you. Thank me.”
“I got him for you, though,” Usman said. “I like you, so I got him for you.” [h/t mmafighting.com]
Usman also talked about his newfound love for his stand-up skill set, but reassured Leon Edwards that they would be duking it out on the canvas come August 20, 2022.
“Of course I fell in love with my striking – that’s why I have more knockouts in championship fights than he has in the UFC his entire career. And yes, I fell in love with my striking, but guess what, you fell in love with your grappling. So, Aug. 20, we going to wrestle.”
Leon Edwards is sure to give Usman a worthy challenge at UFC 278 and he’s also a new name for the champion to finally face after a series of consecutive rematches.
