“I had never heard a single positive thing about Detroit,” said Christen Harper on his fiance’s, Jared Goff, trade to the Lions
When quarterback Jared Goff was traded in a big deal to the Lions from the Rams in January 2021, Christen Harper wasn’t sure what she and her fiancé were “getting into.”
Harper discussed the pivotal moment with Kelly Stafford, whose husband, quarterback Matthew Stafford, was the player Los Angeles received in the trade with Detroit, during an appearance this week on “The Morning After with Kelly Stafford” podcast.

“I remember hearing Detroit and I was like, ‘Wait, what?’ I’ve never been there, and of course, I’ve never been to Michigan either, and so I had never heard a single positive thing about Detroit, and so I was really not sure what we were getting ourselves into,” the model said.
“And then of course you get there and I’m like, ‘This place is amazing.’”

The Rams selected Goff first overall in 2016 and he led the team to the Super Bowl at the end of the 2018 campaign.
Like Goff, 28, Stafford was chosen first overall in the 2009 NFL Draught and played his first 12 seasons of professional football in Detroit.

After the widely reported quarterback switch, Kelly, who has been married to Stafford since 2015, recalled how she contacted Harper.
“I do remember reaching out to you when it happened because I knew the thoughts that were probably going through your head and I wanted to try to make you feel better with the fact that it’s an amazing place,” Kelly said.

Harper then explained how she would help out should a player and their family be relocated to Los Angeles. She is now preparing for her wedding to Jared Goff in 2024 after the two became engaged last summer.
“I think that’s one of the best parts about football, and the connections you make in it, we didn’t know each other, but if I’ve been somewhere before and someone gets traded to LA, I’ll text them or message them on Instagram, and say, ‘Hey, if you need anything, these are the good spots,” she said.

The Rams defeated the Bengals in the Super Bowl 2022, giving Stafford and his family instant success in their first year in Los Angeles.
The Rams failed to make a comeback in 2022, with Stafford, 35, missing the entire season because of a spinal cord contusion in December. The team also had a 5-12 record.
