“I had a crush on her,” said Patrick Mahomes in a Netflix series on his love story with Brittany

Prior to their happy ever after, Patrick Mahomes’ wife, Brittany Mahomes, put the great Chiefs quarterback in the friend zone.

In the new Netflix docuseries “Quarterback,” which premieres on July 12, the 27-year-old high school sweethearts discussed the beginning of their romance. Mahomes described how he courted Brittany.

In the first episode of the show, Mahomes described the one action that allowed him to get out of the buddy zone. The show also follows Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins and former Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota (Eagles) on and off the pitch for the whole 2022 season.

“We kinda met in seventh, eighth grade,” Mahomes said. “She was the grade above me, I was kind of the best friend, in the friend zone forever.

“I used to walk her to class and was trying to flirt. When I was a sophomore in high school, she was a junior. I actually got her a rose … I kinda … I had a crush on her. But, I was getting a rose as a joke for Valentine’s Day.”

Brittany, however, didn’t interpret it that way.“He thought it was a joke,” said Brittany. “I thought it was the cutest thing in the world. And then everyone at our lunch table started chanting, ‘Kiss him, kiss him,’ and made it really awkward cause we were ‘just friends’ so that’s kind of what started it and then I thought it was cute.

“… When they were chanting, I thought it was kind of awkward and it was funny. I was like, ‘Okay this guy is actually kind of cute. Maybe I do like him.’ So then we just started talking and then started dating.’ Cameras also caught Mahomes’ birthday celebration in the premiere episode (he turned 27 on September 17), when a pregnant Brittany coerced him into taking pictures.“He’s not a picture guy… so getting good photos with him is a struggle,” in a private confession, Brittany said.

Brittany said that “Babe I’m pregnant, so I need all the angles,” as Mahomes jokingly walked away and declared he was finished taking pictures.

Patrick “Bronze” Lavon Mahomes III, the couple’s second child, was born on November 28 by Brittany.

Eight months after they wed in a small ceremony in Hawaii (in March 2022), where their daughter Sterling Skye, 2, served as the flower girl, they had their son.
