“I Am Undefeated in These Divisions”- Alexander Volkanovski Gunning for the Lightweight Belt; Says It Will Not Be ‘as Hard as Some People Think It Is’
It appears as though 2022 will be a busy year for Alexander Volkanovski, the UFC’s featherweight champion. ‘The Great’ recently defended his belt against ‘The Korean Zombie’ in one of the most dominant displays in a title fight in recent memory. Volkanovski was extremely vicious from the very first minute of the fight and piled on the pressure until the referee had to ultimately step in and call an end to the fight in the fourth round.
After the fight, Volkanovski stated that he wanted a quick turnaround fight, and the UFC obliged by rescheduling the trilogy with Max Holloway at UFC 276 in July. Max Holloway is a tough opponent for anyone at featherweight, but the champion has plans that go beyond ‘Blessed’.
In a recent interview, Volkanovski shared his thoughts on what he wants after securing a win over Max Holloway at UFC 276. He said, “I am looking at the them (lightweights) and I see great opportunities. I don’t care what people say… mate, I train with lightweights and welterweights as well I am used to big bodies. I am undefeated in these divisions. I don’t look at this as that big of a challenge.”
‘The Great’ continued, “Obviously, I have a challenge in front of me in Max he is a great fighter, but I plan on going my thing, going 3-0, get that #1 pound-for-pound, get that status. I want to go for that double-champ status. And believe me, it is not going to be as hard as some people think it is going to be to do, and that is no disrespect for the guys. People are going to doubt me all the time, and after this one, I don’t think people are going to doubt me too much but if I move up in weight, maybe I get some doubters again and I can prove them wrong again.”
Alexander Volkanovski to fight for the lightweight belt before the end of the year?
The lightweight division is stacked with talent right now. There are a bunch of fights that could be made, including a number of contenders for a title shot as well.
Given how crowded it is at the top at 155-pounds, moving up in weight and challenging for the lightweight belt might not be as easy for the featherweight champion. Needless to say, if Volkanovski gets his chance it will be an epic fight indeed, regardless of the opposition.
