How To Watch Astros Play On Opening Day 2023: Channel, Steaming Links, Roster & Schedule

Opening Day for the Houston Astros has arrived. Teams are prepared to start the 2023 season as Spring Training comes to an end. For the Astros, it signals the beginning of their championship defence.

The Chicago White Sox will be the first opponent for the reigning winners this season. Although the Sox didn’t make the postseason the previous year, they rebuilt by signing Mike Clevinger and Andrew Benintendi.

For the first time since joining the Astros, new first baseman Jose Abreu will also get to see his old colleagues on Opening Day.

Date, time and more for Astros Opening Day

MLB Opening Day is on March 30, so on that day the Astros will begin their four-game set with the White Sox. the series will run from Thursday to Sunday, with the first game taking place at 7:08 pm.

How to watch Astros games without cable

— AT&T SportsNet Southwest is a component of the bundle offered by Fubo. A complimentary tryout is also available for Fubo. Viewers can also watch as much non-market baseball as they want with the MLB.tv add-on ($24.99).

— The $99.99 per month Choice plan from DirecTV Stream includes AT&T SportsNet Southwest for users in-market.

— MLB.TV allows fans who reside outside the Astros’ TV area to view events. You can watch every game from every squad for $129.99 for the season, which works out to $24.99 per month. For $109.99 a year, you can also select the single-team alternative. Again, this only applies if you are not in the Astros’ TV area; otherwise, events will be blacked out. If you reside outside the United States, games will also be disabled.

— For nationally televised games, there are a few options, with some exceptions: Fubo, SlingTV, and DirecTV Stream all carry ESPN, MLB Network and FS1. YouTube and Hulu + Live TV carry ESPN and FS1, but they do not carry MLB Network in 2023.

Opening Day Roster

The Astros revealed Tuesday that three rookies — catcher Cesar Salazar, catcher/first baseman Yainer Diaz, and outfielder Corey Julks — had won the final three places on their 26-man Opening Day roster. As the Astros kick off the season on Thursday, Julks and Salazar are making their Major League debuts, and Diaz is on his first Opening Day squad.

The Astros weren’t prepared for some position-player vacancies because All-Star second baseman Jose Altuve (fractured right thumb) and outfielder Michael Brantley (right shoulder surgery) were expected to begin the season on the disabled list. In left field, Diaz can fill in for Brantley’s absence, and Julks offers them another centre field alternative with Chas McCormick and Jake Meyers.

Catcher (3): Martín Maldonado, Yainer Diaz, Cesar Salazar- Salazar was an unexpected selection, as everyone anticipated a competition between Korey Lee, the Astros’ No. 7 prospect, or Diaz, the No. 2 prospect, for the reserve position. Lee needs to play every day in Triple-A, according to general manager Dana Brown, because of Diaz’s exceptional spring at the bat and his versatility in playing first base, left field, and both positions. Salazar has prior experience as a reserve catcher, which is the position he will hold in Houston to begin the season.

First baseman (1): José Abreu – After spending his first nine Major League seasons with the White Sox, where he regularly ranked among the best middle-of-the-order run producers in the league, Abreu, 36, was hired by the Astros to a three-year contract in November.

Relief pitchers (8): Ryan Pressly, Ryne Stanek, Phil Maton, Rafael Montero, Bryan Abreu, Héctor Neris, Seth Martinez, Ronel Blanco

Second baseman (1): Mauricio Dubón- Due to Altuve’s broken right thumb, Dubón will have the opportunity to start the season at second base. Altuve will be sidelined for at least the first two months of the season.

Shortstop (1): Jeremy Peña- Few players are as well-liked as Pea, who replaced Carlos Correa, a club legend, last year and earned an AL Gold Glove, the ALCS Most Valuable Player, and the World Series MVP Awards as a rookie — an unparalleled set of achievements. What will he perform in 2023 as an encore?

Third baseman (1): Alex Bregman- Bregman rebounded last year and returned to his elite form, hitting .259 with 23 homers, 87 walks, 93 runs and 93 RBIs while playing in 155 games after battling injuries the previous two seasons.

Starting pitchers (5): Framber Valdez, Cristian Javier, José Urquidy, Luis Garcia, Hunter Brown

Outfielders (4): Kyle Tucker, Chas McCormick, Jake Meyers, Corey Julks- After hitting.324 in Grapefruit League play, Justin Dirden (the No. 9 prospect) was the buzz of the spring, but the Astros decided to open the year with Julks, their No. 30 prospect, as their fourth outfielder. Julks, a University of Houston product selected in the eighth round of the 2017 draught, launched 31 home rockets and drove in 89 runs last season at Triple-A, putting up statistics the Astros couldn’t ignore. Dirden has very little expertise in Triple-A baseball and will gain the necessary knowledge at Sugar Land.

Designated hitter (1): Yordan Alvarez – Alvarez began swinging a bat only last week after reporting to camp with a sore hand and had only a handful of at-bats in Grapefruit League play. Still, he was hitting the ball hard enough and without any pain, which means he’s ready to go for Opening Day.
