How Did ‘Dancing On My Own’ Became Philadelphia’s Theme Song: Explained

British singer-songwriter Calum Scott is riding high alongside the Philadelphia Phillies as they make yet another deep run in the MLB playoffs.

How Did ‘Dancing On My Own’ Became Philadelphia’s Theme Song: Explained

The Phillies’ decision to use Scott’s remix of Tiesto’s smash song “Dancing On My Own” as their playoff theme music for the previous two seasons is probably a major contributing factor in the song’s recent 1 billion Spotify plays.

On the social networking platform X, which was once known as Twitter, Scott uploaded a video on Wednesday in which he thanked his listeners for their support and included a shout-out to the Phillies and their supporters in a follow-up post.

If it ain’t broke, don’t repair it when it comes to victory songs, and that’s exactly what the Phillies have done by bringing back Calum Scott’s “Dancing on My Own,” their celebration song.

“I’m there, man, they win the World Series,” Scott said. “I think at that point, you’ll have to hold me back.”

Last season, the Phillies used the song as a rallying cry to win their first National League title since 2009. Will it function in 2023 as well?

“A HUGE thank you has to go to @Phillies also for making this song their anthem two years running,” Scott posted. “It’s an honour boy and I’m incredibly grateful to the players, the club and most importantly the fans.”

The Phillies did play much better in the last few games to clinch the top wild-card slot in the National League playoffs, though it’s not as if the song inspired their turnaround.

They have persevered in their postseason journey through the first two rounds, and they are now only two victories away from making it to back-to-back World Series appearances heading into this Thursday’s NLCS Game 3 against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

As a member of the Boston team, Schwarber took the song to the City of Brotherly Love when he signed a contract with the Phillies in 2022. Although the song gained popularity in the Red Sox clubhouse and among Fenway Park patrons, it has gained its own unique identity in Philadelphia.

Playing it after a victory wasn’t simply a great celebration song; it was a Philly staple. As the Phillies made a push for the World Series, it was hard to avoid hearing the song being shouted out anywhere, from bars to weddings to the streets of Philadelphia. It was the No. 1 song on the postseason party playlist and stayed that way until the Astros knocked off the Phillies in the World Series.

The Phillies made the decision to abandon the song in 2022 and replace it with something new in 2023 after losing to the National League this past season. The group wanted to move on, viewing it as a “second-place song”.

That is, until the Phillies’ situation changed to 25-32 at the start of June. The clubhouse was in dire need of a boost since they had one of the poorest records in the league. The squad tried a lot of other songs to get back into the swing of things, but nothing was quite the same as when “Dancing on My Own” started up again, according to hitting coach Kevin Long.
