“His Aura of Invincibility Has Diminished”- Kamaru Usman Slanders Canelo Alvarez for Jeopardising Their Super Fight
‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ Kamaru Usman is one of the many UFC fighters looking for a big payday with a crossover to boxing. Usman has his eyes set on a super fight against boxing’s pound-for-pound king Canelo Alvarez.
The welterweight champion believes that since it has never been done before, a fight between the pound-for-pound best in two sports to determine who is the best is needed. However, his call-outs for a fight have not been met with the same vigour from Alvarez.
In a recent interview with John Morgan, Usman shared his thoughts on Canelo’s recent fight where he came up short against Dmitry Bivol. He said, “I mean it’s , I mean it’s tough now just because it’s, you know people are fixated on the fact of dominance. Everyone’s dominant and dominant and dominant. I still think its, a you know it’s a tremendous fight. It’s a phenomenal fight because he’s still there in those pound-for-pound rankings.”
‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ continued, “But of course, it’s a bit tarnished now you know because his aura of invincibility has diminished a bit but you know more power to him. He’s a true champion, he’s one of the best boxers that we’ve seen especially in my generation, so you hats off to him. It’s always been nothing but respect, you know it was just I was willing to test and challenge myself and you know he just wasn’t biting me.”
Canelo Alvarez’s loss spells the end of a super fight against Kamaru Usman?
The UFC welterweight champion planned on defending his belt against Leon Edwards in July or August and then fighting Canelo Alvarez towards the end of the year. However, with his recent loss, Alvarez will trigger the rematch clause in his contract with Bivol.

The detour will definitely mean that any possible cross-over super fight this year will be out of the question. It will be interesting to see how long the interest for the fight can sustain if it does not take place this year. Also, the super-fight is contingent on the fact that Usman can hold on to his belt.
