He collapsed unexpectedly and was taken to the hospital, but George Varnadoe Jr. posted on Facebook that the doctors were unable to save him.

The reason of Caleb White’s death, according to his mother Charlette White, was cardiac arrest.

“It was devastating because they were working on him, giving him chest compressions,” Charlette said. “Then they called it and that was it. It was cardiac arrest, they said.

Caleb’s mother said there had never been any indication that he was unwell or had a cardiac ailment.

“He was dead at 17!” Varnadoe said that his grandson was a “phenomenal basketball player, excellent role model, honor student, very respectful, high intellect, and excellent role model.”

“Our whole family was really looking forward to his upcoming senior season and afterwards, playing for a D-1 school and then perhaps the NBA. But…..it wasn’t meant to be,” the grieving grandfather added.

“You see, everything that happens, happens on time, because God wouldn’t allow it to happen, if it wasn’t on time. And so it was with Caleb. We all have an appointment with God, one that you can’t reschedule.”

In a statement released Thursday night, the Alabama High School Athletic Association said that it will be offering counseling in the following days to mourning students and staff members.

In addition to being named to the first team all-state as a junior, White averaged 20.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game last year. In addition, he was listed as the No. 3 prospect in the state of Alabama by ESPN.
