“Hey Dana, You Think I Could Fight”- Daniel Cormier Teases a Return to UFC Action and Names His Opponent of Choice

Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones ruled the lightweight division with an iron fist for the better part of a decade. Cormier won the belt against Anthony Johnson and went on to defend it multiple times before he moved up in weight and captured the heavyweight belt after knocking out Stipe Miocic. His accolades inside the octagon meant that during International Fight Week in 2022, Cormier was inducted into the UFC’s Hall of Fame alongside his long-time teammate Khabib Nurmagomedov.

After being on the sidelines for two years, it appears as thought ‘DC’ is itching to compete once again. In a recent interview he stated that he would like to compete once again. He said, “I said this when I retired, I said I’m only going to fight for championship belts. But it’s like, I don’t deserve a heavyweight championship fight. Stipe [Miocic] is not the champ. He beat me the last couple times. I don’t deserve a shot at the heavyweight title. If I was ever going to fight again — and which, I don’t want to — I would have to go all the way back to 205 pounds.”

‘DC’ continued, “Why? Let me tell you why. Because I didn’t lose. Remember, I vacated the title whenever I didn’t want to go back down there, when [Jon] Jones was going to fight [Alexander] Gustafsson. So because I vacated the title, now maybe there is some potential in, ‘Hey Dana [White], you think I could fight Jiri Prochazka for the title?’ Especially with your name recognition and what you’ve become outside of the fight game, maybe there’s some value in that.”

Daniel Cormier’s return to the UFC a likely outcome?

Although Cormier did say that he would like to return to competition, it is highly unlikely that the UFC would offer a one-fight deal for the same.

Additionally, Daniel Cormier is 44-years old and has a plethora of injuries that he is dealing with which will make it harder for him to make a comeback. However, as we have seen multiple times before, the right amount of money can make the most absurd fights come to life. Therefore, it will be unwise to write off Cormier’s return completely.
