‘He’s the most underrated player in the league’ – NFL analyst heaps praise on 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo

Jimmy Garoppolo’s future is still uncertain. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback missed a sizable portion of the previous campaign. A season after making a Super Bowl push in 2020, the 49ers ultimately missed the playoffs.

Going into the upcoming season, it appears that the 49ers may be considering him as a possible trade piece. On his show, NFL expert Colin Cowherd discussed Jimmy Garoppolo.

He thinks Jimmy doesn’t get the recognition he merits as a competent quarterback. He emphasized how the 49ers had a difficult year without Garoppolo. Additionally, he has won the admiration of several top coaches, including Mike Shanahan and Bill Belichick.

“I think Jimmy Garoppolo has now become the most underrated player in the NFL, by a mile,” Cowherd said on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd.”

Although Garoppolo underwent shoulder surgery in the summer and isn’t yet fully recovered, former 49ers great Steve Young said he anticipates Garoppolo will request his release after passing a medical.

The 49ers haven’t traded Garoppolo yet in a quarterback-heavy offseason that has seen the likes of Russell Wilson go to the Broncos, Carson Wentz goes to the Commanders, Deshaun Watson goes to the Browns, Matt Ryan goes to the Colts, and Baker Mayfield goes to the Panthers.

A $27 million salary cap for the 2017 season makes Jimmy G, who guided San Francisco to the NFC Championship Game last season, more difficult to move. However, Cowherd believes that more clubs ought to look consider signing him

”You’re not invested for years since he just has one year remaining on his deal, according to Cowherd. “We watched him outperform Aaron Rodgers at Lambeau, didn’t we? He usually wins games when he is available.”

The 49ers were sixth in completion percentage (68.3 percent) in 2021, seventh in passer rating (98.7), second in yards per attempt (8.6), and first in yards per completion with Garoppolo at the helm (12.7). In a run-first offense, that is.

Will Jimmy Garoppolo depart from the 49ers? What the franchise wants to do with him appears to be up for debate. The team could be reluctant to let him leave so easily considering the shortage of quarterbacks available in the NFL.
