“He’ll Get a Title Shot for Sure”- Alexander Volkanovski Points Out a Potential Super Fight Opponent for His Next Fight
There are several storylines that came out of UFC 273 over the weekend, but none more polarising than the possible return of Henry Cejudo. UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski put on a clinical performance against ‘The Korean Zombie’ and virtually shut down any and all offense that he tried to establish.
Chan Sung Jung was nearly out on his feet several times during the fight and it was Herb Dean who came in to save him with a clean stoppage. Jung certainly lived up to his moniker and Volkanovski showcased that he’s arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet.
His victory brought him praise from a large number of fans and fellow fighters and was also possibly the reason why Henry Cejudo has officially announced an inclination to return to active competition.
Volkanovski open to defending his belt against Henry Cejudo
Alexander Volkanovski addressed the headlines that said Cejudo had re-instated himself into the USADA testing pool and that he would compete. According to ‘Volk’ this move was merely white noise and Cejudo wasn’t genuinely planning to make his return.
“I’m not taking it too serious. A lot of people are, but I mean every time he says stuff. The good thing is that at least you guys want to see that, so that’s good to know… I don’t think he deserves a title shot straight away. He’s been out of the game for a while. He’s been retired…. But again, if there was ever a time to flirt with ideas like that, maybe it is now.”
Despite his skepticism, Volkanovski is interested to fight Henry Cejudo if it makes sense for the future of the division. This is in fact a huge deviation from his earlier statements, saying that he would never entertain ‘Triple C’ for a title shot. However, things seemed to have changed.
“I still think he’s in the same position as some of these other fighters. I don’t think he needs a couple of fights, I think he just needs a feeling out featherweight fight. He goes in and dominates and he’ll get a title shot for sure.”
It remains to be seen if Henry Cejudo truly plans to make his return or if he is merely looking to steal some shine from Volkanovski’s impressive UFC 273 win.
